Travel and Valium

I arrived back from my NYC trip quite happy. It was nice to get away to a place which I love and feel comfortable. It also gave me a glimpse to how I am still 'me' underneath this depression and anxiety which is covering me at the moment. Before my visit I was suffering major anxiety over the travel. But I assured myself that I could do it and I have done so much travelling before it couldn't be that difficult.

However, someone decided to push me and test me to the limits. I departed my home city late due to weather, ran for my connecting flight in the next airport. This was no fun and needless to say I was not looking or feeling my best when I arrived at the gate but I'd done it. I dealt with the stress and settled into the flight.

My next one saw me fly to Toronto where I would then fly a short journey to NYC. As I settled and put all my in flight needs into the pocket in front of me I suddenly began to realise that we were not anywhere near taking off time. How could that be when I had to do an airport dash? I looked around and the crew were just wandering. Then came the announcement - We will be delayed due to technical difficulties with the wing. Seriously?! Yep, they were serious. When we took off we were half an hour late, as I calculated this with my connection time I began to panic that my next flight would be another airport dash. But luckily, my prescribed Diazepam (Valium) kicked in and I managed to get a few hours sleep.

Two hours before the end of the flight I awoke with a horrific headache and began to panic. I couldn't figure out why, I just knew my head was in pain, I felt sick and I had no paracetamols with me. When you're taking Valium it's not something you think you'll need! So I worked my way to the air stewardess at the back of the plane and asked for some. She gave me the tablets and my panic rose it's head. I began to shake and I could feel the tears building. The stewardess came back to me to check and realising I was not doing well, sat me on the jump seat.

We talked and she gave me sugar water which she said helped one of her friends during attacks. Brought me tissues and sent other passengers back to seats to allow me space alone. She and another stewardess continued to check on me and comfort me throughout the rest of the flight. Even walking me back to my seat at the end. When I told my doctor this she replied, "Oh Missy, that's when you should have taken a diazepam to help too."

Yea, not just the fringe I have in common with Zooey now... [Source]

As I left the flight I realised that I was cutting it short but felt relaxed again until I realised I had to collect my luggage in Toronto and take it to the bag drop (a 25 min walk) through Canadian immigration and American immigration. When I reached the bag tagging area I was told I had missed my flight - no really?! I didn't know! Booked onto another and sent on my way, after being told I did not have an ESTA - which of course I did. Hello, severely depressive with high anxiety is going to have her document and stick to the rules. Cue more panic when approaching US Customs. Of course, all was fine and I was through, bag dropped and used that time to find a spot at a bar, have some food, and have random strangers strike up conversation. It's accent - gets people every time when I'm travelling!

They all want to hear me talk [Source]

So, needless to say that's the first time I've ever missed a flight, had a panic attack mid flight and needed Valium just to get through a day. I could have sat and cried - believe me, I wanted to do that in Toronto airport, in fact, I didn't want to actually leave Toronto airport - but I didn't. I kept going and kept strong. I decided to look at it as showing me that I am still capable of doing things at the moment and also I am able to work through the anxiety, even when alone.

Have you ever had a travel issue which has made you realise how strong you were?

NYC bound!

This is it folks... by the time this posts I should be well on my way to NYC via Toronto?! Don't ask! To say I am feeling anxious is an understatement. It will not be an easy journey alone but I know my fabulous BFF - Miss Faux Fur - will be waiting for me! Also, I have travelled Australia, America and Canada alone so this should be a breeze. Just the little issues of depression and anxiety to deal with but I well medicated! I look forward to sharing my times when I return!

I heart NYC!

Meet Mar!

It has been a long week but you've all made it! Today I have a special post from my sidebar sponsor, the lovely Mar from to&fro. She loves hockey (her husband is a pretty great player) and travel so what is there not to like? Enjoy getting to know her and show her some love!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi, my name is Mar and I can be found over at t.o. & fro. I am excited to be taking over Missy's blog today!!

I started this blog back in 2010 when an unexpected move took us over 4000 miles from home in Toronto to the land of the midnight sun, Alaska!  It was a great way to journal our adventures, as well as keep in touch with family and friends back home. Alaska immediately stole our hearts, giving us both opportunities we had never imagined and allowing us to meet some incredible life-long friends in the process.  We were absolutely meant for that place, but, like all good things, it had to come to an end and we decided it was time for the next adventure.  So now we are back in Toronto, surrounded by family and friends, and continuing to pursue our dreams.

4 fun facts about me:
+ I work as an educator/animal handler at an aquarium.
+ I'm a total animal lover and have worked numerous animals including dolphins, walruses, birds and fox.
+ I love photography, camping, hiking, fishing and anything that involves being outside. + I recently got married!

On top of being an educator/animal handler by day, I am also my professional hockey-playing husband's #1 fan by day, night and weekend. Living the hockey life is something I don't talk about often, because let's face it,  when the words "professional", "hockey" and "player" come out, it usually trumps everything else, and there is so much more to us and our relationship than just hockey.  You can say our life is a pretty crazy one and we definitely don't have your typical Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 kind of gigs, but we're both doing what we love to do, in a place we call home, and wouldn't change it for a thing!

So there you have it friends, a glimpse at my life in a [tiny] nutshell. To learn more about how we met and our adventures, pop on over and say hi!  I look forward to being friends!

Travel Time - NYC

I love travelling, there is something about going to new places which just makes me so happy. I have decided that I wanted to share some of the places I have been and some of the things which I loved doing while there.

First stop - NYC

I have chosen New York City to start as it's my favourite place to visit and is the place where I will be come end of October for a much needed short break. My thought on NYC is that you either love it or hate it. No one can say, "It's just ok."

So, a bit of a back story on this wonderful city. My love affair began when I was 20 - my brother chose to get married in Central Park. Myself and family made he trip out and when driving into the city I though, "Is this it?" I have to admit I wasn't totally taken, in fact I was slightly scared. This, as you know, did not last long at all. I stayed in the 30/30 (Now known as King and Grove after a short spell as Hotel LoLa). In my days in the city me and my family did the whole sight seeing thing and as I was immersed in the buildings I realised that my initial reaction was changing and changing fast. The big change for me was The Empire State building - this is where I cemented my love with NYC.

What to do in the city?

Empire State Building

I would advise to pre-book tickets and if possible gain fast track, especially if you're going in the Summer or Christmas time. The views of the city are just unreal so I don' want to spoil it for you. It literally too my breath away when I first looked out. It is definitely somewhere which should be your number 1 site to visit.

Madison Square Garden

If, like me, you're a hockey fan than catching a game at MSG is a must! Unfortunately for me I witnessed a loss but it was still amazing to be a part of. If you are wanting to catch a game, I can't stress enough that you need to pre-book!! If you expect to turn up and buy a ticket a couple days before or game day itself then you will be left extremely disappointed. Also, do not buy from those selling 'tickets' outside and around the venue. The possibility of being ripped off are higher than high. I actually met a couple who had been swindled and believe me, there are better ways to spend a few hundred dollars. If you can't get a ticket? Watching a game in a sports bar is another favourite of mine. You see the game close on big screens, the drinks are flowing and you're in a party atmosphere.

Brooklyn Bridge

This has to be another favourite of mine. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge. It is quite a walk so make sure you are well prepared! At midday, you will find office staff out power walking and running. You will also find lots of cyclists so please take note of the correct paths! I've walked into Brooklyn and also down to the area known as DUMBO. This area is where you can look over towards Manhattan and gain super views of the bridge. It also houses Grimaldi's pizza shop which is definitely worth a visit! Make sure to get there early as yes, people do queue.

Bars and Nightlife

If there is one thing NYC is not short of, it's places to drink and party! I have had some of my best nights out in Manhattan. This includes partying with boys in bands, after hour drinks with my favourite bartenders (friends of mine now), cocktails in a speak easy place as well as many different sports bars. A couple of places you should check out:

Death&Co - A place which takes their cocktails very seriously. If you're a vodka fan, like me, you have no choice as vodka is the spirit they don't use. The place is exclusive and the waiting list can be loooonnnnggggg. It only seats about 50 and you have to get past the doorman but it's cool place to see and I loved it.

230 Fifth - Again, it's an exclusive cocktail bar. You access it by riding a lift to the top of what looks like a business building. You come out into a large bar surrounded by floor to ceiling windows with views of the city. If you take he stairs up you then come out into an outdoor bar with views of the Empire State building and the rest of the city - lights all twinkling. If you're there in Winter? It doesn't matter - you get fetching red robes to keep you warm.

The Flying Puck - This is a hockey bar where the drinks flow and the games go. I love the vibe and met a good friend who worked there. It's a fun atmosphere on game days, normal days maybe not the p[lace to visit for a party.

There are, of course, so many more places but I will save those for another day.

Have a head over to Travel Babbles where I am lucky enough to be featured by the fantastic Kym!

I hope you've enjoyed today's little glimpse into NYC - I have a lot more where this comes from for this city. Feel free to contact me with any questions about my travels.

Quote of the day Monday...

At this moment I will be somewhere in Canada, possibly travelling to a new destination, partying, seeing new sights or sleeping ...I don't know( I can't figure out time differences in advance) so when I was thinking of a quote for today I thought what better than to have a travel quote.

A good friend of mine, Mr Music, loves the author Jack Kerouac. For years and years he has told me to read 'On the Road'. I trust him that it's a good book but I just never felt the time was right to read it. But now... that time is here. I have taken it away with me to read and I hope it makes me feel even more inspired. Therefore today's quote is from Jack Kerouac. I also hope my trust in him is well deserved...I'm sure it will. After all he is the one to introduce me to so many new bands which I just love.

When deciding whether to go away over the Summer alone I did spend a lot of time wondering whether it was the 'right'  thing to do. It may seem that it's not a huge thing, but for me, to do something by myself was a big step. I thought about the people I would let down when I said I couldn't go away with them or those who wondered if I was stupid to go alone (even though I would be with a group). I reached the point where I thought-'I don't care'. I didn't mean this in a selfish and mean way, I just thought for once I should put my wants first. If I want to do something I should do it now while I can. After some chats with Miss Twin I felt more confident that people would be happy for me and see it as the opportunity it was...a very special one.

So while this quote is here now, I will be having fun, learning new things and above all I will be happy!

Enjoy the quote!

It's nearly time...

Tomorrow is the day I begin an adventure, the kind that I never thought I'd take. I am heading to the USA to travel to a few places then up into Canada before returning to NYC where I will have a few selfish days all to myself. A couple years back I hated doing anything alone and now I'm doing this? I will be with a group of people who will also be doing the same trip. I am nervous and excited all rolled into one. What sights, friendships and musings will the trip bring? I was lucky to receive many great gifts from my kids at the end of the school and one in particular I loved. It was a pretty notebook which as soon as I opened I thought would be a perfect blog book/journal for while I'm away. I never know when I'll feel inspired.

While I am away, this little blog will not be standing empty. I have wrote a few posts and have a few guest posts (Thank you for helping me out!!!) to keep you all entertained. See how thoughtful I am? Well, I'm off to pack the itinerary and make sure I haven't forgot anything.

Battered and bruised but ready for another journey...

I look forward to sharing some great photos and stories when I return.

(Change of) Life Plan...

I met up with a good friend not too long ago and along with our other girlfriends we had a lovely lunch. She was up visiting home and we all took the chance to have a proper catch up. This was especially important to us all as she announced the other week that she is pregnant. Yep, it’s started. My close friends are beginning to have children.

She is extremely happy about this but freely admits it wasn’t planned and she was freaked out at first. Not because she didn’t want kids but because she just didn’t think she was ready at this point in her life. We all chatted about our own expectations (in the way only girls can) and related back to what we thought we wanted when we were younger.

When I was about 15, I had my life plan mapped out:
-          Married by 20 (with a huge dress- I blame Barbie for that one haha)
-          First child by 22
-          3 kids
-          To stay at home and look after my children
-          Loving husband
-          Be a nursery nurse

It was that simple. As you can tell, I was a very home focused person and very much focused on the idea of raising a family. Things however have not turned out like that, as I grew older my goals in life changed somewhat. I began to realise that yes, while I still want some of the above (I also have a girls baby name picked out haha), I also want more life experiences for myself before I begin to influence those of my own children.

I have places I want to travel to, things to see and I want to be selfish for a little bit longer. I don’t mean selfish in an awful way, just that I want to do what I want to. When I have kids that will be me saying that everything I do is for another person and I will be happy when that day comes.  I am also very thankful that I am not married as some of the men in my past wouldn’t have been the most reliable husband material!

I still want the kids and the caring husband and the family but I also want to feel like I’ve excelled in my job and travelled some more. In my daily job I feel so happy that I get to influence the life of so many children who don’t exactly come from the happiest of homes and if I can make them smile and have an excitement to learn then I am happy.  I think that has suppressed my want to have kids so young. I have 28 of them every day to look after!

I am so happy for her, as she is happy and I can’t wait to spoil her little one (I’m sure it will be a girl). I am going to continue just changing my mind back and forth one day at a time - I suck at trying to stick to schedules and deadlines anyway ...
